The purpose of the Shuswap Music Festival is to provide an opportunity for amateur and/or young performing artists to demonstrate their achievements in music to their peers and to the community.

Da capo signs should be observed. Repeat signs should ordinarily be ignored, but at the discretion of the teacher and student, may be observed where deemed appropriate.

JUNIOR PIANO
 
            Pre Grade 1 - 6 

SENIOR PIANO
 
            Grades 7 – ARCT  

NONCOMPETITIVE   PRE-GRADE 1 CONCERT GROUP
Two or three contrasting selections listed in the Royal Conservatory of Music Syllabus Preparatory A, Preparatory B, Introductory Level, or Conservatory Canada Pre-Grade 1 book. This class may be entered two years in a row. 

ADDITIONAL REPERTOIRE
Refers to additional repertoire that participants wish to perform in a category in which they are already entered - for example, a second Baroque or Romantic piece, or a ‘popular list study’. These are to be entered at the same grade level as other repertoire entered. 

BACH, J.S.
A selection composed by J. S. Bach only. 

BAROQUE/ EARLY KEYBOARD  
Music of the Baroque period (up to 1750) as represented by the music of Telemann, Scarlatti, Handel, Rameau, Couperin, etc. (excluding J. S. Bach). 

CANADIAN
Works by recognized Canadian composers - many composers are listed on the CMC website at “www.musiccentre.ca”   

CLASSICAL
Music of the Classical period (circa 1750-1825) - Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, etc. or pieces written in a definite Classical style by later composers.  The number of movements to be played should be as listed in the syllabus for that grade. 

CONCERT PROGRAM
Two or three contrasting selections - one of the selections may be one grade higher.
        (one mark is given for the overall performance) 

FRENCH
Late 19th century composers: Debussy, Ravel, Dukas, Roussel, Faure, Ibert, etc. 

NON-COMPETITIVE
Classes will be scheduled separately from competitive classes. Participants will receive a verbal and written critique of their performance(s). Any class may be entered non-competitively. 

ORIGINAL COMPOSITION
An original composition must be written and either performed or arranged to be performed by the participant. A copy of the score must be mailed to the Festival office by March 15, 2012. 

ROMANTIC
Music of the Romantic period (circa1825-1910) as represented by the music of Brahms, Chopin, Grieg, Liszt, Schubert, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, etc. -  or pieces written in a definite Romantic style by later composers.  

20TH-21ST CENTURY  
Work of a recognized 20th-21st Century composer such as Kabalevsky, Prokofiev, Gretchaninoff, Bartok, Khatchaturian, etc. (excluding Canadian composers). 

MINI-CONCERTO
Up to Grade 7
Orchestral part to be played on a second piano - accompanist to be arranged by the performer. 

CONCERTO CLASS
Grade 8 and over
One movement - orchestral part to be played on a second piano - accompanist to be arranged by the performer. 

NON COMPETITIVE OWN CHOICE PIECE – NON SYLLABUS
One selection only, grade level must be consistent with other entries  - refer to copyright rules as above.   

ENSEMBLES

DUET
One selection - any period. Please include all performers’ names and information on the entry form. Grade level is that of the most advanced performer.   

TRIO  One selection - any period. Please include all performers’ names and information on the entry form. Grade level is that of the most advanced performer. 

TWO PIANOS/FOUR HANDS
One selection - any period. Please include all performers’ names and information on the entry form. Grade level is that of the most advanced performer.  

TWO PIANOS/EIGHT HANDS
One selection - any period. Please include all performers’ names and information on the entry form. Grade level is that of the most advanced performer
