STRINGS

Refer to the General rules and information section at the front of this syllabus for more information.

 
MUSIC PROCEDURE 

Include the name of your instrument on the entry form. 

Participants are responsible for supplying their own music stands. 

Piano accompaniment only is permitted (unless otherwise specified). 

Participants must provide their own accompanist and include the accompanist’s name on the entry form.

 

MUSIC CATEGORIES 

Select entries from the following list of categories. 

See GENERAL RULES AND INFORMATION for Syllabus and grade requirements.

 

ADDITIONAL REPERTOIRE

Refers to additional repertoire that participants wish to perform in a category in which they are already entered - for example, a second Baroque or Romantic piece. These are to be entered at the same grade level as other repertoire.

 

BAROQUE  

Music of the Baroque period (up to 1750) or pieces written in a definite Baroque style by later composers.

 

CANADIAN

Work by a recognized Canadian composer.

 

UNACCOMPANIED BACH  

Grade seven and over - Sonata, Partita or Suite

 

UNACCOMPANIED SOLO

Music written for solo instrument. (not Bach)

 

 

 

 

 

 

CLASSICAL  

Music of the Classical period (circa 1750-1825) or pieces written in a definite Classical style by later composers.

 

SONATA  

Grades 4-8    one movement

Grades 9-ARCT one or two contrasting movements

 

ROMANTIC

Music of the Romantic period (1825-1910) or in the Romantic style by later composers.

 

 FRENCH COMPOSER  

 Late 19th century composers: Debussy Ravel etc.

 

20TH-21ST CENTURY  

Work by recognized 20th-21st Century composers, excluding Canadian composers

  

ORIGINAL COMPOSITION

An original composition must be written and either performed or arranged to be performed by the participant. A copy of the score must be mailed to the Festival office by March 15, 2010.

CONCERT PROGRAM

Two or three contrasting selections. One of the pieces may be one grade higher. One mark for the overall performance.

 

Junior Concert Class (Gr. 1-3)                               10 minute time limit

Intermediate Concert Class (Gr. 4-7)                    15 minute time limit

Senior Concert Class (Gr. 8-diploma)                  25 minute time limit

 

NON- COMPETITIVE  

Classes will be scheduled separately from competitive classes. Any class may be entered non-competitively. Participants will receive a written and verbal critique but no marks will be given.

 

NON COMPETITIVE OWN CHOICE PIECE – NON SYLLABUS

One selection only, grade level must be consistent with other entries – refer to copyright rule as above.

 

SUZUKI STRINGS NON-COMPETITIVE BOOK 1  

This class is for any piece from Suzuki Book 1 that is not listed in the syllabus.

SUZUKI STRINGS NON-COMPETITIVE BOOK 2 

This class is for any piece from Suzuki Book 2 that is not listed in the syllabus.

ENSEMBLES

 

DUETS…………………………………………………..one selection

The “principal” partner (higher grade) should submit the entry form. Please pay for the duet separately from other entries. Half the Fee paid by each partner is acceptable, but both payments must accompany the Duet entry form. Include each partner’s age, grade & instrument. Include Duet information on both participants’ solo entry forms.

 

 

 

 

 

 Note: Performances are to be 10 minutes in length maximum.

 

TRIO/CHAMBER ENSEMBLE…………two contrasting selections

3-6 performers-A combination of any recognized orchestral instruments. (one performer to a part). Piano may be included. When piano is included, the piano part must be original and not an orchestral reduction.

 

            Junior………………………..Average age…14 & under

            Intermediate………………..Average age… 17 & under

            Senior……………………….Average age….28 & under

 

Note: Performances are to be 15 minutes in length maximum

 

ORCHESTRAS……………………………….two contrasting selections
7 or more performers-Any combination of orchestral instruments. Entries are to be submitted and paid for by one member. Include the average age of entrants and number of performers.
